about

Edward "Ned" Daly (25 February 1891 – 4 May 1916) was commandant of Dublin's 1st battalion during the Easter Rising of 1916. He was the youngest man to hold that rank, and the youngest executed in the aftermath. He came from Limerick City.

lyrics

We hid in the long grass and fought on the same side
Our hurleys were rifles The sliothar no ball
Ran through the Shannon Fields crouching like soldiers
Made the front door as the big drops started to fall

Walked through the Bull with a brick as a diving suit
Swapped pigeons in the back street down by Schoolhouse Lane
Built camps in the bushes Left our childhoods in Limerick
Great words were written Our hearts were aflame

Fi diddle di diddle di dum

Dark clouds in the East We joined up as volunteers
Seen off at the station by the Boys Marching Band
Easter was rising The Good Shepherd sleeping
The first day dawned in freedom’s new land

Men of this island we are called to the moment
Listen and hear Let there be no debate
Our strength Our courage Our conviction Our duty
At noon we declare the New State

Fi diddle di diddle di dum
On the wings and flame of a gun
Far better to die ‘neath an Irish sky
Fi diddle di diddle di dum

The grey skies of Limerick hung low in the morning
The bells of Saint John’s rang out in the square
From the ashes a rose From the heavens we watered it
Ned Daly lay still in the May morning air

Fi diddle di diddle di dum
On the wings and flame of a gun
Far better to die ‘neath an Irish sky
Fi diddle di diddle di dum
